Redeemed: From Outsider to Family

May 10, 2026    Scott Dent

This sermon walks through Ruth 3–4 to unpack what it truly means to be “redeemed.” Using the Old Testament laws of the kinsman-redeemer, the pastor explains that redemption always involves three realities: we were originally God’s, we became lost, and a price had to be paid to buy us back. Boaz’s costly decision to redeem Ruth the Moabite—despite the risk to his estate and reputation—becomes a powerful picture of Jesus’ willingness to claim broken, unlikely people as His own. The message then turns toward the church, warning against the attitude of the older brother and the first guardian-redeemer, and calling believers to joyfully welcome and disciple those God is bringing in, no matter their past or appearance. It concludes with an invitation for unbelievers to accept the redemption already purchased for them, and a challenge for long-time Christians to let God continually expand their hearts and their “inheritance” for the sake of others.
